The Institute has been named after Shri S.G Balekundri was Civil Engineer with great vision. His far sight and broader perspectives gave true shape to Malaprabha, Ghataprabha, Alamatti and Narayanapur dams of the south,north and eastern regions of Karnataka States. Shri S. G. Balekundri was an authority on dam construction, irrigation works and water resource development and its allied subject. He was highly competent administrator. His integrity and concern for the larger interests of the state were unimpeachable. Shri. S. G. Balekundri is not only an architect of these prestigious irrigation projects, but also he is remembered as “Second Visvesvaraya”

The Institute has five academic departments with 50 well qualified faculty and 720 students and 100 plus administrative and supportive staff and is a self-contained campus located in beautiful green surrounding . It has established itself as a premier centre for teaching and research. It has well organized laboratory and well equipped library.
