The UN secretary general, Ban Ki-Moon , announced Wednesday the establishment of a fund of 40,000 million dollars to improve the health of women and children, which will save millions of lives worldwide.
Governments, philanthropists and private groups pledged the money in cash on completion of the UN summit dedicated to poverty reduction.
"We know what works to save the lives of women and children and we know that women and children are critical to achieving the Millennium Development Goals," Ban Ki-moon said in a statement.
