St Mary's Middle School is located in Thirthahalli which is a town in Shimoga District of Karnataka. The place is located in Western Ghats which is in the middle of dense forests. Thirthahalli lies along the bank of river Tunga. There are many villages in this place and it had a lot of poor and uneducated people. In order to provide education to these people, the school began. The school started in 1958 with nursery section in the old chapel where the Sisters were allowed to stay by the parish priest. In the initial days, school was conducted under the trees with benches having been borrowed. The school building was constructed in 1965 and few classrooms were added later.
The school grew in strength over the years and started adding more pupils. Since the rooms were small, a separate block was added with extra classrooms with the help of Bishop Ignatius Pinto. The old building was replaced in 1999 as the previous building was growing weak. The current building is spacious and has good classrooms. St Mary's Middle School celebrated Golden Jubilee in 2007.
The present headmistress of this school Sr Lilly D’Souza. There are about 300 students studying in this school which has had more than 9000 students in its 60 years long journey.
The school provides good infrastructure and facility in order to provide good education to students. Along with academics, sports and extracurricular activities are also provided importance. The alumni of the school turn up to provide services such as health check-ups, training and mentoring of students in various activities etc.
